Michael Goodchild, Emeritus Professor of Geography, UC Santa Barbra Presents... COMMUNICATING GEOSPATIAL UNCERTAINTY All geospatial information is subject to uncertainty, for a number of reasons. I review the nature of geospatial information and its sources of uncertainty. A number of general principles can be articulated, leading to conclusions regarding the description and modeling of uncertainty, its propagation, and its impacts on applications. Communicating geospatial uncertainty is especially problematic, and for various reasons uncertainty has been essentially banished from traditional cartography. I use numerous examples to illustrate these points. The presentation ends with a summary of what is currently known, and promising directions for further research.
