I have been extremely interested in the development and use of the State Plane Coordinate System throughout my career. I have also been involved in Airport Design for the last 25-years. As such we were responsible to tie in all of our work to the local State Plane Coordinate System in order to be able to provide accurate State Plane Coordinates for all Runway End points, NAV AIDS, etc. as well as Local Airport Coordinates (which are typically based on one of the major runway centerlines as due north with one runway end point assigned a specific local value. The FAA uses these Runway End Points in State Plane Coordinates in Order to utilize them to provide Navigational Guidance throughout our National Airspace. The amazing fact is that not that many Engineers and/or Surveyors that I have dealt with over the years, fully comprehend this system of coordinates.
