Task
Calculate new coordinates for a boundary in a forest. It is not possible to use GNSS. The approach is to traverse with a total station. The yellow points are unknown. For these points new coordinates have to be calculated.

I have the choice of using old measurements or measure a new traverse. What is the difference in accuracy. What do I gain with new measurement? Here the picture of the two equipments. For both choice I set an accuracy o

How Blogging is Like Land Surveying

I originally wrote this post on my father's blog back in June of 2008- now look and see how far we have come since then.

An update:
Through close to three years of experience creating LSU, I have come to understand how much blogging may not seem very useful to the common land surveyor. For that very reason, all blogs on LSU are referred to as "articles."Nevertheless, by now all of us have at least heard about what a blog is. Today I am going to explain to you how blogging is a lot like land sur

The Gap that Swallowed the Land Surveyor

The Gap that Swallowed the Land Surveyor

By Pean Cheneying, PLS

A client who was a custom home builder ordered a Standard Survey (survey without the benefit of a title policy) on a parcel composed of a fractional lot in a recorded subdivision created in the 30s. This particular client had ordered some small subdivisions in the past but they were redeveloping this existing fractional lot and building an expensive custom home on it. Many of the parcels within this particular subdivision were bei

Going Green is a reality!

Teamed with multiple trade professionals for more than 8 months intricately our surveyor’s laid out the path to completion. Watching the woods being parted at the Brookhaven National Laboratory certainly was poignant.  However, opening the provision of expanse provided Green energy and lighting for more than 4,000 Long Island homes. I considered it a true historic moment.  A huge under taking, we utilized our Trimble robotic total stations, GNSS and conventional tools to perform like a well oile

Survey Pincushion Effect

Every so often we will find a property corner that is monumented multiple times.  This is often referred to as a “pincushion” corner.  Property law and the law of boundaries demand that an existing monument that was originally set in order to represent a property corner be honored by all following land surveyors. By this definition, a land surveyor is either an original surveyor who is establishing new boundary lines and setting corners for the very first time, or the land surveyor is doing a re

11 Sloppy Social Media Mistakes To Stop

1198853740?profile=original

Sadly, I discovered something a couple of days ago while checking out my Klout Score. I had recently unfollowed a LOT of land surveyors on Twitter due to inactivity or simply lack of use and noticed that my score actually went up! I try to not unfollow surveyors who are on this network, but I am seeing that if I were to do so, I'd probably go up in score another 10 points. Why does this matter? Because the ever fluctuating Klout measures a person or entity's overall influence on the web, taking

I received a phone call from Joanne who said she was purchasing a home on a lot in a block of a recorded subdivision. She said she needed a Land Title Survey. I pulled the current tax report on the property, the current tax mosaic showing the property and sent her these along with a p

This is a continuation of an earlier article that I wrote on the subject of Certificates of Merit. I am not surprised that this issue continues to arise.

We continue to see tests of the Texas Civil Practices and Remedies Code due to changes that were a result of the recent tort reform. Case law in the particular area of Certificates of Merit has been evolving and despite some early questionable statements by the Court (see my previous article) it seems to have reached a certain maturity.

A repeat client contacted me about a possible purchase of a small commercial site in the center of a suburban city. This client typically purchased commercial properties and then reconditioned them into a profitable businesses. He would then either sell them or retain them depending on the revenue stream and capital gain. We had been able to save him from m

A 113 Year Old Land Surveyor, Laid to Rest

1198857485?profile=original(Japan) Tomoji Tanabe, the world's oldest man, died in his sleep at his home in southern Japan on Friday -- according to a city official said. He was 113. "He died peacefully. His family members were with him," said Junko Nakao, a city official in Miyakonojo on Japan's southern island of Kyushu. Tanabe died of heart failure, she said. Tanabe, who was born on Sept. 18, 1895, had eight children - five sons and three daughters. The former city land surveyor

When Do You Need a Survey?

1198857427?profile=originalAs we all know, there are times when the public needs a survey but is not aware that they need a survey.  I was thinking it might be time to compile a list of examples for when its time to call a qualified professional land surveyor.

You may need a professional land surveyor when...

..a property is divided into parcels for sale or development

..a property is to be sold, purchased or mortgaged

..a property improvements are planned or to be developed

.. government regulations require a survey and

Thank you Fellow Surveyors!

Thank you for making "6 Miles With Courage" a success.

Sales are brisk and the reviews have been spectacular. One surveyor writes, "I wish my wife had read your book 10 years ago! Ever since she finished it she has had a whole new level of respect for my job." She gets up with me in the morning and packs my lunch and sees my off. She never done that before!"

And another surveyor writes, "My son and I have become a lot closer since he finished your book."

Something Typical In Surveyor Reporting

I thought that some of you might gain some insight by examining a typical Surveyor's Report generated for a project I am working on.

I have altered the particulars so as to protect the innocent. This is a draft copy, I am still working on it.

Truth, Justice and the American way

Unable to find a satisfactory job and stuck in a job I hated I finally opened up my own Land Surveying Firm in mid 1992. I was 32 at the time and thought that I knew everything about Land Surveying because of my previous experiences. It goes to show you that arrogance is most often a result of ignorance.

As I look back now I realize that I had no idea at that time what I was doing and I am really uncertain at this point how I managed to survive in the beginning. After a couple of bumpy years howe

Land Surveyor named Indiana Jones

One day I was sitting in my office in Downtown Houston around 5:00 pm in the afternoon in 2001 when the phone rang.  My secretary had already left and I was not anxious to answer it.  I had a comfortable practice running three field crews and another Professional Land Surveyor in the office.  I was daydreaming about maybe selling the business for a million dollars and jus
