Three new land surveying topics have been added to the network forum today. When you view the forum in "Grid Format" you will see them on the left hand side. They are as follows:

We have all seen things while surveying that most people in society would never run across in daily life. Gators, snakes, bears, planes hitting buildings, dogs catching birds...the sky is the limit. Tell us about it!

What do surveyors talk about at work? If

Introducing Surveyors of Land
For surveyors out there who like to goof off (I can't imagine there are any, but what the hey), I have an exciting announcement. Among us is a member by the name of Clay Ostrom, animator, artist and the creator of a new animated series called "Surveyors of Land." This show is centered around the lives of two land surveyors who get in all sorts of adventures and troubles, while doing practically anything they can to get out of actually doing work. I had a chance to c

What is Happening to our Profession?

Hello everyone! I pose this question to you... What is happening to our profession? Yesterday, I was riding to a project site making conversation with one of my younger co-workers, and I asked him if he enjoyed surveying. The response I got made me physically ill. He quickly responded by saying, "No, I hate it. Surveying is a dead-end job." I was stunned! So I asked him why he felt that way. He proceeded to tell me that when he started working in the surveying field, he wanted to learn any and e

Backsite 2010 and Traverse 2011

This is a recap on the message that I sent to everyone earlier today.  Because of harsh weather in many parts of the country and many surveyors switching companies or losing their previous email accounts altogether, I figured I should post this here for you to see.

First, I wish you all a happy new year and chose to purposely wait a few days into the year to send you this wish, as it is genuine.  Last year was the toughest that many can remember ever living through in their lives, including my

Annoying zoom extents?

In AutoCAD 2000i LDD when double clicking the mouse too quickly the drawing does a zoom extents. For example I have a three-button mouse, the center button (the mouse wheel) being the culprit, it controls the zooming and panning. Well I will be flying around in the drawing, zoomed in to some degree and then it happens; zoom extents!I think I found a fix to this problem by typing in at the command prompt: "viewres" and hit enter, you are then prompted with the question "Do you want fast zooms?" b

Hello Surveyors!
You have most likely noticed that everyone's profile has a "Gift" application at the top by default and wondered to yourself "What the heck is that?"

Maybe you thought it was dumb and just continued about your business-perhaps you gave it a whirl. Don't give up so easy-there is actually a good reason for giving gifts. What i am here to tell you about may be of great interest to any of you who are interested in building lasting relationships with other land surveyors on LSU. W

I ran across something unusual the other day.

I'm by no means a computer geek so I will try to explain this the best I can. I was working on an AutoCAD drawing and had the drawing minimized so it was using half of the monitor's screen area. On the other half of the screen I was viewing a survey of record available online from the County Surveyor's office as a .tiff file which is made available by way of a Java application or platform (not sure of the correct terminology here). Well anyway I walked away from my computer for a while and when
