Ian Smith replied to Chuck Turlington's discussion Mean Sea Level (MSL)
"I can't imagine what reason would necessitate the need to use the old National Geodetic Vertical Datum (1929) in preference to the more recent calculation. There will of course be localised and in all probability negligible differences simply…"

Trimble Business Centre - Disappearing Point Clouds

I'm using the Trimble SX10 to undertake scans of short sections of motorway for the purpose of deformation monitoring. As expected and due to the fact that the road is live the resultant point clouds include a significant amount of "noise" generated by passing traffic. I am attempting to remove this otherwise spurious data in TBC but whenever I go to save my project (prudent or so I thought) large parts and sometimes the whole cloud simply disappears.I've done the usual swith off and on again,…See More

"Hi Ian, How much free space do you have on your machines disk, and how many scans are you working with? You're on version 4.10? I would recommend making a post on TBC's community forum, I have had luck getting help…"

Ian Smith replied to Jeffrey A. Koester's discussion Did education requirements hurt our profession?
"We could do with some of that South Carolina good sense in the UK. The fact is, even engineers don't actually require a qualification here. I've known a good number of engineers who have nothing more than experience behind them. Some have…"

Ian Smith replied to Jeffrey A. Koester's discussion Did education requirements hurt our profession?
"That's the point. There aren't any. Anyone can call themselves a land surveyor in the UK. No minimum qualification, no mandatory system of registration and/or certification."

Ian Smith replied to Jeffrey A. Koester's discussion Did education requirements hurt our profession?
"People are walking around and supposedly surveying without a clue yes but who's letting it happen? I used to enjoy doing things to "long way" back in the 80's but I wouldn't swap my robotic total station, GNSS receiver and…"

Ian Smith replied to Jeffrey A. Koester's discussion Did education requirements hurt our profession?
"Education? No. The biggest factor that continues to hurt our profession is the industry wide failure to differentiate between engineering surveyors and engineers. Combined this with a lack of any statutory regulation (RICS is now largely irrelevant)…"

Ian Smith replied to Robert Cory Boisclaire's discussion TSC3 Freeze up
"Are you using Access or SCS900? I've never had one freeze with Access but freezing and crashing happened with increasing frequency when using SCS900 after approx' 9 months of heavy use. A regular message regarding memory was resolved…"

Ian Smith replied to Octavian Turlea's discussion Is a degree actually worth it?
"Fundamentally it all boils down to where precisely you want your career to take you. In simple terms it is not necessary to spend so much time in higher education, chasing degrees in order to work as a land surveyor. I spent four years, studying 1…"
