(This is not always the case, after a while the pipes are often filled with dirt.)It's a typical monument for this area: They often still set "stones" (even if these are now made of concrete instead of granite). Only in places where it would be impracticable to set such a monument, other markers are used. That's another difference to Hanover: There usually other monuments like pipes with plastic caps are used, as you don't have to dig a hole to place them but you can just drive them into the ground with a hammer.</div>Monuments in New Development Areahttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/photo/monuments-in-new-development-area2012-05-24T19:14:24.000Z2012-05-24T19:14:24.000ZTim K.https://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/TimK<div><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1206093382?profile=RESIZE_400x&width=400&transform=rotate%2890%29"></div><div>In new development areas around my hometown you can often see PVC pipes set in the ground like these. Sometimes a stake is set next to them.Sometimes they contain a cable, for example for street lamps which will be put up after the houses and streets are build. But usually they contain a boundary monument. The area is subdivided and the new boundaries are monumented before the lots are sold and houses are build. To protect the monuments during the construction works these PVC pipes are set around them. The stakes, often painted red at the top, are set to make the monuments better visible, they do not mark the exact position of the boundary. This is a interesting difference to Hanover, where I live now: As far as I know here in and around the city it's common now to subdivide the area for a new development by calculating the new boundaries without survey. If they are monumented, it's done after the construction work is done, so they won't be disturbed.</div>Undisturbed Monumenthttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/photo/undisturbed-monument2012-03-24T21:48:29.000Z2012-03-24T21:48:29.000ZTim K.https://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/TimK<div><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1206088376?profile=RESIZE_400x&width=400"></div><div>A similar monument at the same boundary, still in its original position. There are a few boundaries where a circular arc (often at an intersection of two roads) is approximated with short straight lines, and here all corners where monumented.Somehow it's strange how many monuments (boundary and control points) I notice now if I just look around a bit while walking through the town, where I used to walk over them without noticing anything.</div>Disturbed Monument IIhttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/photo/disturbed-monument-ii2012-03-24T21:48:26.000Z2012-03-24T21:48:26.000ZTim K.https://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/TimK<div><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1206088472?profile=RESIZE_400x&width=400"></div><div>The former position of the disturbed monument is clearly visible in the pavement. It used to mark the boundary between the public road (gray pavement of the sidewalk) and private land (red pavement).</div>Disturbed Monumenthttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/photo/disturbed-monument2012-03-24T21:48:23.000Z2012-03-24T21:48:23.000ZTim K.https://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/TimK<div><img src="https://storage.ning.com/topology/rest/1.0/file/get/1206088135?profile=RESIZE_400x&width=400"></div><div>Wile walking through my hometown, I found this "curiosity".
