See how to create a new, scheduled backup to an external drive using the tool.

It isn’t always easy to get people to back up their systems. Sometimes end users are being lazy, but sometimes the problem might be that the backup tool is difficult to use. A free, volunteer-developed tool called Synchronicity can have end users backing up (with scheduled backups) with ease without having to spend all day configuring those backups.

Synchronicity’s features

Easy to use interface

Backup easily to USB

Inclusion/Exclusion

Scheduled backups (with automatic rescheduling of missed backups)

Mirror

One-way incremental

Two-way incremental

Multi-profile support

Plenty of documentation (including hidden features)

Portable

Advanced features (such as dynamic destinations, time offsets, loose timing, file size comparison, and more)

In this quick tutorial, I show how easy it is to create a new, scheduled backup to an external drive using the Synchronicity tool. Note: The requirements for Synchronicity are .NET 2.0 or greater and the admin password (if applicable) to the machine.

Installation

Download the package with the installer included, double click it, and walk through the installation. Once it’s installed, there will be a new menu entry in the Start menu called Create Software. In that menu, you will find the Create Synchronicity sub-menu, which includes the Create Synchronicity executable (and the uninstaller). Click Create Synchronicity to start the setup process.

Create a new backup

When you start Synchronicity, you will see the main window (Figure A). From this window, click the New Profile button, which will ask for a new profile name.

Figure A

This window will list all configured profiles. Multiple profiles can be saved for various backup jobs.

Once the new profile name is added, the Profile Settings window will open (Figure B). In this new window, you must configure the following:

From: Target to backup.

To: Destination to backup to.

Subdirectories: Subdirectories for both From and To.

Synchronization Method: Which way is the backup sync’ing.

Include/Exclude

Figure B

Not many backup solutions are as simple as Synchronicity.

For folder locations, you can use the following path formats:

Absolute: D:\Path\to\folder

Relative: ..\..\folder

UNC: \\IP_ADDRESS\folder

Volume Name: “Drivename”\folder

Once To and From have been set, click the Local folder tree button to reveal the directory structure. In this directory tree, you can include/exclude specific subfolders. If you need to include/exclude specific files, you must uncheck Copy All Files and then select what you want to include or exclude.

In the include/exclude section, you can use the following:

Files by extension: As in tar; zip

Files by full name: As in “File.exe”;”File2.exe”

Regular expressions: /File[0-9]+\.(doc|xls|ppt)/

After you complete those steps, the new job will be listed in the Profiles section. If you click on that job, a drop-down will appear where you can do the following:

Preview

Run (Synchronize)

Change settings

Delete

Rename

View log

Clear log

Scheduling

If this is to be a scheduled job, make sure to select Scheduling. When doing this for the first time, you will get a prompt that says Synchronicity must be run as a startup program. By enabling a profile for scheduling (Figure C), Synchronicity will register as a startup program.

Figure C

If you want Synchronicity to catch missed backups, you must check the box for the feature.

Bottom line

Synchronicity is one of the fastest ways to help get end users (and clients on a tight budget) to back up their files and folders. Synchronicity will not image a machine, but for some users just getting that data backed up is a huge step forward.

CADStations or Engineering Workstations.https://landsurveyorsunited.com/hubs/computerhelpforsurveyors/forum/cadstations-or-engineering-workstations2012-01-17T01:56:18.000Z2012-01-17T01:56:18.000ZDaniel Beltzhttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/DanielBeltz

I am building a line of inexpensive (low cost not cheap there is a difference) workstations and I can custom build them if you want certain things. I am building a application that will be very inexpensive and wont need 2K computers. It will run on your android cell phone or android tablet. So you can have a data collector for a couple hundred dollars (your cell phone is just doing duty) or with a $150 Android Tablet with a 5 inch screen to a as much as you want for a state of the art tablet. But the key to this is I want to make a great application with unique and outstanding features for a price that is in the 200 to 300 dollar mark. Some of the features I am looking at is Instant data share (Even file for a copy protection on this) Where all people on a crew can sync there data with each other in the field and with the home office in real time. (As the point is saved it will be uploaded by means of Internet connection IE wifi or cellular. This is a two way sync pulling the data back from any other device and the home office. The application will also do least squared in the field. By request of my uncle a PLS here in Michigan who requested this software and is my Guinea Pig for the software. When he was looking for new software and the software was $2K+ I think that is insane. Now this is not my Day job this is my free time project. But if I can make a living doing it I would do it for a living and help every one here I would. So start giving me feature request. Argue the features pros and cons. I am trying to build a great application for all of you. I have 2000 Surveyors here to let me know what you want and need. So help me give it to you.

Dan

Thales/Magellan/Ashtech ProMark3 THE INSIDES AND REPAIRhttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/hubs/computerhelpforsurveyors/forum/thales-magellan-ashtech-promark3-the-insides-and-repair2011-12-10T17:49:56.000Z2011-12-10T17:49:56.000ZDaniel Beltzhttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/DanielBeltz

This is going to be a work in progress. Warner, PLShttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/ScottDWarnerRLS

Computer [kuhm-pyoo-ter] -noun - a catalyst for processing and storing human ideas by beginning with a logical input and proceeding illogically to a logical output.

Are the monkeys running the zoo again? Sometimes that's exactly how I feel when performing calculations or drafting maps with the aid of one of these diabolical devices. Things get a little bit abstract and removed from tangibility when performing math and making drawings with the now almost irreplaceable computer. It's a good thing that Pythagoras and Einstein did not have one. Likewise it is also a good thing that Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso did also not have to rely on one to create a masterpiece.

Nevertheless, it was indeed human intelligence that created the masterpiece we now call the computer to perform routine calculations and render graphics that should have taken much longer otherwise. The computers that most of us are familiar with do not think or know anything at all. They merely do what we "command" them to do.

On one occasion, a client of mine said something like "I want to know where the real property line is - not just where your GPS unit (a computer) tells you it is". Yes, wow!

I had to explain that my GPS equipment doesn't "know" anything and that it is only used as a measuring tool, especially between two points that you can't see between. Somehow that made sense, I assumed, by the blank look and the sound of crickets.

A computer is no more a mathematician than a piano is a musician. Yet, somehow we have venerated the computer as being more complex than it really is. To "know" your computer and how it produces the results that magically come out of it is only to "know" yourself and what you put into it. Garbage in, garbage out.

So the next time you don't understand why your computer doesn't do what you want it to do, make sure you are speaking the same language. Until then, don't expect your computer to help you do anything any faster or better than you could have done without one.

The profession of land surveying has come a long way with technology and it is surely headed toward the incorporation of more advanced "tools" to make life easier. Let's make sure "easier" isn't confused with "smarter".

This is as general and satirical as it gets. Now what sort of trouble or nonsense is your computer up to today?

-Scott D. Warner, R.L.S.
