Note of important and interesting factoid from NSPS:

You may be aware that the initial version of the Minimum Standard Detail Requirements for Land Title Surveys were adopted in 1962 by the American Title Association (now American Land Title Association — ALTA) and the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM, now merged into the corporate structure of NSPS). But, did you know that those standards were primarily based on the Technical Standards for Property Surveys adopted by ACSM in 1946?

A statement in the preface of the 1962 ALTA/ACSM standards says "while the 'Technical Standards for Property Surveys', adopted by the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) in 1946, are recognized as clear and concise technical standards for property-line surveys, and are so recommended, it is recognized that members of the American Title Association (ALTA) have specific problems peculiar to title insurance matters which require particular information in detail and exactness for acceptance by title insurance companies when said companies are asked to insure title to land without exceptions as to the many matters which might be discover-able from survey and inspection and not be evidenced by public records."
