How many of you have ever used a bookmarklet?

How can a Bookmarklet Be Helpful to a Land Surveyor?

A bookmarklet is like a tiny wizard that lives in your browser's bookmarks bar and can magically transform any webpage with a single click. To add a bookmarklet, simply drag and drop it into your browser's bookmarks bar. Once it's there, you can summon its power by clicking on it while you're on any webpage. Voila! The bookmarklet will work its magic and do whatever it was designed to do - whether it's highlighting text, translating a page, or just adding some extra pizzazz. So go ahead and add a bookmarklet or two to your toolbar and watch your browsing experience become even more enchanting! Simply click, hold and drag any of the following Bookmarklets up into your browser bookmarks bar for quick access from anywhere. Then, when the mood strikes, simply click the bookmarklet and it will take you right to where you want to go for a quick post.

1) Right click on your browser toolbar and create a folder, call it "LSU"
2) Drag any of the following bookmarklets into that folder
3) Now anytime you have something to share, no matter what website you are on, simply click one to start a post. Easy as that!

Here is a cool trick for how to do this, from the field or office.

Go to this page while logged in to Land Surveyors United and you'll see something like this:

Step One: Copy that email address which is generated just for you and head over to your email account. Add surveying related photo as an attachment to a new email. Send one photo or video per email. The subject of the email becomes the title of the photo or video, and the body becomes the description.

Tip:After sending an email to that address you will not need to remember it anymore as it should be saved in your contacts.

Step Two: Next time you are in the field, take a photo on the jobsite and email the photo to the network. Be sure to give them good titles and descriptions.

Step Three: The Next time you are on Land Surveyors United go back to your photos and add tags and locations to make your photos useful to other surveyors on the network..

Disclaimer: Any photos uploaded without proper titles and descriptions are subject to deletion from network. Please Do not abuse this feature as it can get you suspended from community.

Bonus Tip: If you'd like to attach a map or lat-long to your image, add this app to your phone called GeoMessages and send it using that app. You can also use the app to send location logs to your own email or otherwise to let them know where you are surveying. And in case you aren't aware, you can also import your surveying photos to the network from Flickr.

Our new modular layouts in Hubs bring many mind blowing abilities which can strengthen the community and by importing your social media efforts from other channels, all of your work can be placed in a central place.

As you may already know, Hubs have a page feature called "Social Channel" (example 1, example 2 inside hub) which allows a Hub Leader to import an entire Youtube or Vimeo Channel with a single click. However, there may be times when you just want to show a curated playlist instead of your own uploaded videos. In this case, I have created a quick workaround.

Videos Trick: Do More With Your Surveying Videos Using HTMLhttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/forum/topics/videos-trick-do-more-with-your-surveying-videos-using-html2013-09-25T23:22:05.000Z2013-09-25T23:22:05.000ZEl Surveyorhttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/ElSurveyor

Video Trick- Add HTML to your Description

Just in case you haven't figured this out yet,you can do a lot more with the Videos section of Land Surveyors United than just adding videos. Using HTML, you can easily add photos, embed links and also add documents like pdfs, powerpoints etc. using embedit.in, scribd or ISSUU as shown on this video on my surveying network or here:

How to Do This
Its quite simple, even if you only know a little bit of HTML. You can always practice by opening up a new blog post, add text and images, then take the HTML from your practice and add it to the description of any video that you upload or embed to LSU>
Bonus TIP: Right click on any image already hosted on your website such as a logo or photograph and create the HTML code using a NewBlog Post, take that code and placeit into the description.

Do you even know? Is that voice identifiable online? Is it something that you can say you belong to? Do you feel like your personal-professional voice is being taken into consideration when surveyors in your area are represented? Is the surveying industry in your area collective represented on a global scale?

Most likely, the general public in your geographic region has no idea as to the importance of a professional land surveyor. I say this because it is something that the vast majority of land surveyors on the planet share in common, world-wide. This needs to change and it is up to us to turn this situation around. Luckily, this seed of change has been embedded into the mission and goals of Land Surveyors United since 2007. Nevertheless, it requires a small amount of effort on your part and I will show you the way. NOTE: A special new tool is introduced at the bottom of this post along with some powerful tips on ways to make the most of your membership on this network by becoming an administrator of your location-based-hub.

A Living Museum of Surveying Online

Our primary mission in building this community has always been to curate Surveying Related discussions, photos, education and most importantly representation for all surveyors in every location on earth. For this very reason, every group forum (hub) on the network has within it a dedicated forum specifically for that location. With that said, a membership in this community is a pillar of strength for the industry as a whole, globally, but most importantly, this strength is supported and promoted on the local level. join your area's hub and start a discussion/share relevant experiences/ meet other surveyors in your area. Land Surveyors United is dedicated to curating a virtual representation of the surveying industry in your location, its history, present and future of land management. However, let us not forget that Land Surveyors United is not me- it is us. I do what I do so you can do what you do better. Others will follow your example if you give examples to follow. This is how we prepare for the future.

Every surveyor on this network should join and become a part of at least 2 Group Hubs- one for your continent and one for your country/state. This is a quick 2 part process:

1)Join a Group

2) Start a New Discussion in side that group and make your presence known.

You can find quick access to these groups below. Please help us get conversations started in these groups.

Step One:You simply make a call to 646-543-5781 and after the greeting, speak clearly and leave a message for the community. At the beginning of your message, state your username on Land Surveyors United if you would like for us to attribute your comment to your profile.

Step Two:Come back to Land Surveyors United on Fridays and listen to all of the voice messages that have been left by your fellow members. It is important that you speak clearly so that we have an understandable voice message. You can leave the message in any language you speak, but preferably english.

Each week we will roll out a new theme and topic of conversation. Each week you can call in and air your opinion on that topic and/or anything else related to the industry that you care to express, but do not have the time to type out or post during the work week. This new experimental service will begin tomorrow (Friday Nov 8.) and will last forever or until it has been determined that the service is not of interest. We hope to get as much representation as possible from all areas of the world. If you like, you can also click-to-call from your pc or mac below.

Imagine A Radio Connected to the Globe

I have a test page up and running on the Mobile Rover here that you can test out if you are using the Google Chrome Browser. Simply click the microphone and speak. After it transcribes your text, copy and paste it into a forum post, surveying story or any of the places where content is curated on the site.

Volunteers Needs Toward the End of the Week

I will need a few volunteers to help me test this application in various browsers and devices towards the end of this week so if you could make yourself available for an hour or so, please respond in the comments below with the following information:

Name or Profile URL

Type of Mobile Device You Take to the Field

Best Way to Reach You By Phone on Wed (send to me in a message if more comfortable)

I'm looking forward to bringing this network even further into the future with this Surveyor Dictation PTT feature. If you are unavailable to volunteer please feel free to comment anyway and let me know what your thoughts are on this project.

~We added the day of the week to the Event listing heading, so that surveyors can see at a glance what day of the week an event is on.
One final note: Land Surveyors United belongs to you, our members. It is controlled and developed by me, but this network does not exist to help my career. It is here for you. I cannot improve things without feedback, so please feel free to send your suggestions. I have put in a LOT of hours on this mobile version in order to enrich your lives, through giving you new avenues of professional communication and a solid place to learn, share and build a legacy for yourselves. Obviously, what you do with it is entirely up to you. Nevertheless, I hope that you take the time to explore these gifts and tools and use them to become better at what you do, both on and offline. And for those new to the network, keep in mind that this network is developed and maintained with 100% member donations, so if you'd like to help, it is always welcome.

How to Customize Your Network Profile for Success Part 1https://landsurveyorsunited.com/forum/topics/how-to-customize-your-network-profile-for-success-part-12012-07-15T00:11:41.000Z2012-07-15T00:11:41.000ZJaybirdhttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/Jaybird

It is impossible to meet everyone in person, so think of your network profile as a representation of your higher self. With that said, I am going to show you a few ways to get your profile looking like you want it. Whether you would like to customize it to match your company brand or just showcase the types of work you have done/are doing. After all, a complete profile is 86% more likely to attract business proposals.

What You Can Do Will Surprise You

You do not need to be a web designer to accomplish the following customizations to your profile. Here are a few tips and pointers for easily customizing the look and feel of your profile so other professionals on the network gain a clear understanding of who they are associating themselves with.

You can customize your MY LSU (your profile page) in several ways.

You can CHANGE THE THEME

Click on the My Page Tab (if you're not already on your profile page)

Under you Main Photo (upper left) you'll see "Change My Photo" or "Theme"

Click on the Theme Link to get to the "Edit the Appearance of Your Page" page
(You'll see that you can even upload and add a customized header if you have the wherewithal to create one)

You can MOVE THE FURNITURE (profile modules)AROUND

(okay, it's not furniture, but you can move the elements around to customize your layout)

go to your MY PAGE

move your mouse over the top left corner of the element you want to move (more specifically next to the name on the title bar)

you'll see a crosshairs icon

click and drag the box to its new location

Where and How to Add Widgets

Let's suppose you want to add a widget, such as a Twitter follow button or a facebook like box. The most obvious place to add widgets, videos, photo slideshows, or text links is the text box module. The text box supports some HTML (see definition below) and can be easily used to add text links to sites off of Land Surveyors United, display a video that you added to the network, add a photo slideshow from an album of uploaded photos, from Slide or any other widget provider! Additionally, most text fields throughout the network, or places where you would answer a profile question, add a comment or create a blog post, support some HTML.
These are some basic HTML tags that can be used in text fields:

This makes a link

This makes a paragraph break

This makes a line break

This makes something bold

This makes something italic

This underlines something

<strike>This puts a strikethrough line through something</strike>

adds an image

TIP: If you link to your website, make a link on your website which links back to your profile address. This is called a reciprocal link and it will help the search engine rankings for both sites.

Give a hand to unlicensed surveyors??https://landsurveyorsunited.com/forum/topics/give-a-hand-to-unlicensed2011-04-07T02:05:39.000Z2011-04-07T02:05:39.000ZAnuar Alizhttps://landsurveyorsunited.com/surveyors/AnuarAliz

HI everyone,

I have noticed some posts asking for help like "how to do a traverse" or "I am new to something" related to very basics surveying, that made me think about who are we giving a hand and instantly recall some construction site discussions like "I have 30 years of expertise but I don't know exactly what I'm doing", this is what you get when unlicensed people recieve help on doing a job that shouldn´t be doing.

Can you imagine a lawyer or a doctor (medicine) doing a job with no license?, what about licensed lawyers, doctors or engineers helping unlicensed people to do their jobs??

I´m from Argentina, here you are a licensed surveyor only when you have studied and passed 5 years at the university, I also know that in the US, in some states you got to do some practice work before doing the exam, go to the university, or have an engineer degree to get the license, but the general idea is the same (professionals must be licensed to do their jobs).

Of course sharing ideas is always good, so I'm not against that at all, what I suggest is to reach a professional discussion level that will help licensed surveyors to do better their jobs, the basic aspects of surveying should be learned at the university or looked up in books.

Thanks.
