Phil Fedor's Discussions

NSPS exam

Started Sep 29, 2011 0 Replies

I've been having trouble landing a job here in Phoenix since 2008.  I finally decided that some certifications might be a benefit to me.  I've applied to take the LSIT, but that exam is in April. In…Read more →

Party Chief/ Drafstman Resume

Since this is the first one, here's the guinea pig link: Phil%20Fedor%20Resume%20RevLS.pdf I hope this works.  If not, I'll just copy the text from a word file. This is probably an antiquated way of resume layout & presentation.  I guess my real trouble is convincing any possible employer is that they get real value…See More

Blue Top (construction grade stakes)

An antiquated way of establishing plan grades by setting the top of a hub to the plan elevation (subgrade, finished pavement, top of curb, invert of a pipe). Its used a lot here in Arizona as labor is fairly cheap, so cheap they cannot do simple arithmetic to determine elevation or bother to purchase a level & rod. This puts the onus wholly on the layout surveyor since the contractor has no way to check the grade prior to performing the work.  The problem lies in that as soon as a grader,…See More

LSIT certification or NSPS CST certification

I need a little guidance.  LSIT certification or NSPS CST certification?  I'm torn between which exam to take. Which would you hire?  I understand there are many variables in a hiring decision.  However, all things being equal, what do you think would be most beneficial in this economic climate?I qualify for both, but do not have the means for both exams.  I dont wish to reach too high and and exclude myself for a job, but I do not wish to go too low either.Given your answer, what would be the…See More

"Hello Phil,   I feel the LSIT would be the way to go, but that is my opinion because there are more surveyor outfits in MD that require the LSIT over the CST.   I would also look into how many jobs require the CST in your location and see…"

Still no surveying jobs

Posted on June 8, 2011 at 11:02am 3 Comments

Had an interview last week with DEI in Phoenix.  It was a good  meeting, one of the best I've had since 2008.  However, its still another case of being too expensive - they can't afford much in benefits, no healthcare coverage, and cannot guarantee 40 hrs/wk.  Since I have a regular steady job (which I cannot stand), its a huge risk to go back into surveying to support my family.

I'm growing weary of the wait for the recovery to happen in Arizona.

I see new houses under…
