I went to the University of Washington to get a degree in civil engineering (I know there's a joke here somewhere), luckily fate intervened, and I found my way to a 2-year Land Survey Technician degree and a great education at Renton Technical College in Renton, WA.
I couldn't be happier with my career choice...except that I graduated in June 2008, and we all know how rough it's been since then.
I've been very fortunate, however, to remain employed for most of the last 3 years. I just learned that I passed the Fundamentals of Surveying Exam (LSIT) in April 2011, and my goals are to work in the field for 10-15 years, eventually get my license and go from there.
