Where are you surveying?

GPS coordinates

Hi everyone. In a railway or highway (let say 500 km.) construction project, do we need to run a close traverse from 0+000 to 50+000 and return back to 0+000 or can we just use directly the control points established using GPS let say in every 200 m. thanks..

  • Thanks Mr. Imam. How about if the client is already have their permanent control points along with this very long track of proposed railway or highway project, let say, they have control points in every 200 meters or below, and it was already approved by the government office responsible for the project. If in case we found out that their control points (let say first two control points) did not match on our coordinates taken by our total station, are we going to correct it or we just adopt their existing control points and we will apply for correction ( distribute the error to the tertiary stations) in order to prevent changes for the succeeding control points? Thanks

    good evening

    Ā Dear,

Ā As per my experience with using gps what i learn while using gps if we are using RTK(real time kinematic) we cant rely on this survey sometimes what happen in rtk that error is going higher according to distance.

secondly, if we use static survey we have to find at least 2 known point on both end and start the traverse and give the time according to distance.with this we no need to follow the procedure of loop closure.at the time of processing the base line we need to balance the base line with reference to known points we have then we can start our job. and for elevation we need to use the geoid at time of processingĀ  for that area for perfect and believable result. once we set our control points perfectly we don't have any problems in project in future

    thanks

    with regards

    • Thank you very much Mr. Walter for your idea. Let say we will establish control points of about 100 meters interval using RTK, is it possible to adopt these coordinates using total station or we just use RTK all the time when we are going to layout the alignment. Because i think that theirs a little bit difference about the coordinates taken by GPS and Total Station. I mean if we are going to occupy the second control point and back sight to first control point using total station, i doubt that it will not coincide. thank you..

      Hallow there,

In the construction project ofĀ  the highway or railway of 500km, this is a little bit long distance, you need to use GPS for the control establishment, and if using RTK (real time kinematic), i advice short distances of about 100m long from 0+000.
